The receipt is the interface

Sara Iqbal2 Jul 2026 · 6 min read

Four people order at a cafe. One had the walnut cake nobody else wanted. Splitting the bill equally is not fair, and splitting it by hand takes longer than the meal did.

Read it where it was taken

Chukta's text recognition runs on the device. The photo does not leave your phone to be read, which is both faster and the only version of this feature we were willing to ship. What comes back is a list of lines and prices you can correct.

Assigning is tapping

Each line gets the avatars of whoever ate it. Unassigned lines stay visible with a running total — "Rs 340 unassigned — assign Green tea to finish" — and the Apply bar stays disabled until the receipt reconciles. A receipt that does not add up is not a split anyone should be able to save.

Tax and service split in proportion

Not equally. If your items came to a third of the food, you carry a third of the tax. That is the arithmetic people do in their heads when they are being fair, so it is the arithmetic the app does by default.
